In Memoriam - Uncle Jack Deiner

It is with a tear in the eye and sadness in the heart that we say our goodbye's to our Uncle Jack, who passed away quietly during the morning of 14 April 2010.

All the Rotarians of the Middelburg Rotary Club will remember Uncle Jack as the ultimate gentleman who always had more time for others than he had for himself. He was the ultimate living example of some-one who lived by the 4-way test, and he did so in a most graceful fashion.

We will miss his sage advice and guidance (from the right hand side of the President) on all matters relating to Rotary which was given with all his more than 50 years of Rotary experience and a lifetime of community involvement.

Our sincerest condolences go to the Deiner family on this great loss to them.

Donating Blood - Rotary at work!

The Middelburg rotary Club was hard at work at the SA National Blood Service on 6 April where they had organised a drive for blood donation, after the Easter weekend when blood stocks were severely depleted. A beer or cold drink was handed out to donors as a gesture of thanks, and the SANBS received 44 pints of blood during the 2 hours of the event. Double what they would normally get on a similar evening. Thank you also to the Middelburg Observer for advertising the event.

We will be doing this again. REMEMBER every drop makes a difference!!!

Club inducts 4 new members

On 30 March 2010, during an Anne's evening the Middelburg Club inducted 4 new members to bring the total membership of the club to 30.

These new members are Mariette Stapelberg, Michele, Johan Pullen and Louis Dique. It was agreat evening during which DG Albie van de Venter assisted in the induction of these new members and gave a wonderful presentation on the state of the District

Interact organises 7-a-side soccer tournament

The Middelburg Interact Club are at it again. The club organised a 7-a-side soccer tournament at Middelburg Hoerskool on 27 February 2010. 8 teams entered and participated. The spirit within which all the games were played was wonderful and all the participants were winners. The tournament was won by the Jamaican Jammers, who beat the Black Aces 1-0 in and esciting final. In an all Hoerskool match, the team from Excelda beat the Blue Gunners by 3-1 to get 3rd prize. Interacter Ernst Brandmuller was the winner of a special FIFA Worldcup 2010 shirt in a lucky draw. Well Done to President Zakkiya and her spirited team.

Delivery of White Wheelchairs - A Rotarian's Perspective

Middelburg Rotary Club received a donation of sturdy white wheelchairs with the assistance of Forever Resorts. These White chairs were obtained from the Free Wheelchair Mission in Los Angeles.
On the 12 Feb 2010 I arrived at the Vukanetaemba office. This NGO is operating in Mhluzi. Met Josephine, Ennie, Martha and ???. Without hesitation they got on the bakkie and directed me too the identified houses in Ext 2 and Ext 4 in Mhluzi.

Our first stop was at April Skosana on his old white chair with a young girl caring for him trying to move best around a peach tree for shade. In my usual wanting to get things right I wanted to get rock and rubbish removed so that the new chair could get out from the back. An expression on a onlookers face told me this was not my territory. So I focused on the new chair, explained the pump and spanner and operating of the chair. April at first was resistant to all the excitement but once in his seat the expression changed and a youth told me he would clear a path. The message was so clear that in our endevour to help people we still have no right to make inroads into their highway no matter how big or small.

Our next stop was at Linnah Sibonyoni. I waited while they fetch her from the back and brought her to the lounge where we handed over her chair. On been placed on her chair she exclaimed “Die Here het gekom” God has come. I told her no but a messenger from Rotary doing our bit to help. She hugged me and shed tears of shear joy.

The third stop was at Aaron who has a sight impediment. His only concern was how long could he use the wheel chair. He kept looking away from the camera until I realized that he could only see slightly at an angle. So grateful and the family pleased because it was difficult getting him anywhere.

Last stop was David who is a character on his own. He said jokingly that he could now chase the ladies. Sitting on his old wooden bench and not been mobile has been a huge frustration. Such pure joy on his face and his statement that now he can do something too.

Rotary is blessed to have ladies like Josephine and her team identifying people in need and daily working with them. Truly a calling.

ED MEYER - Our Roving Honorary Rotarian

During December 2009 and early January 2010 Ed and Sally Meyer had several visits to the Rotary Clubs of Strathroy and Grand Bend in Ontario, Canada. It was an exceptionally cold winter and on the forty kilometre trip to Grand Bend with Peter and Dini Twynstra, we experienced scary “white-out” conditions, with zero visibility along the roads at times. Snow lay 50 cm deep outside as we joined Grand Bend Rotarians for a fun filled evening. Greetings from Middelburg Rotary were passed on and a generous cheque was handed over for a laptop and printer for Lene Kuhn, principal of Elandslaagte Primary School. This school is also a beneficiary of 50% of the contents of a 40 foot container, packed full of second hand school desks, blackboards, fifteen thousand library books and other learning material. The ‘Twynstra’ container has now been unpacked and delivered. Peter and his tour group of Canadians will be able to see and experience the appreciation of their generous donation when they visit the school on the 5th March.

In- coming President of Strathroy Rotary Club, Chris Das, sends greetings to Middelburg Rotary and the Care Village which their club has supported.

On the 26th of January, the Middelburg Interact Club raided the Ann's evening of the Middelburg Rotary Club. Interact President Zakkiya Latib roped President Owen into the induction of 4 new members. The quickly strengthening Interact Club has many projects planned for this year, one of which is a six-a-side soccer tournament in the run up to the FIFA World Cup. Well done!!!

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS - AN APOLOGY

President Owen Maroleni and the Middelburg Rotary Club hereby extends its sincere apologies to the sponsors of its Christmas lights and the community of Middelburg for the state and appearance of the lights.
All the Christmas lights were thoroughly tested before they were put up. Unfortunately a number of lights were damaged by the inclement weather in December, and in some instances the electricity supply to the lights from the street light was defective. Attempts at maintenance on the lights were severely hampered by the continuing thunderstorms and unavailability of equipment to undertake the required repairs.
The Middelburg Rotary Club will make every effort to ensure that the 2010 Lights project does not suffer from the same problems.

Middelburg Interact Club has been busy in December

The Middelburg Interact Club under the able leadership of Pres Zakkiya has been rather busy this December. The club has been involved in a christmas party for foster children, helped hand out food hampers in Nazareth to the needy in the community, and have assisted at the St Josephs Home for the Aged in preparations for Christmas.

In addition they also found time to deliver fruit to the patients in the Middelburg Hospital, and spend time playing with some of the children there.

Middelburg Rotary Club help families of destroyed houses in Mhluzi

During the past week, a driver of a truck of the local municipality lost control of his vehicle, and ploughed through a number of shacks in Mhluzi. These shacks were destroyed, and a number of the inhabitants were killed. President Owen was on hand to hand over some much needed blankets to the affected families

The Middelburg Interact Club has been busy in November. President Zakkiya and her club assisted Midack athletics Club by manning a waterpoint at one of their road races. The club was awarded a trophy for their efforts.

I addition the club joined forces with Steelcrest High school to decorate the St Josephs Home for the Aged with Christmas Decorations. All the residents were impressed.

9 members (nearly 50%) of the Middelburg Rotary Club donated blood at the Middelburg Blood Donation centre recently. This is a new project of service to the community which has a severe shortfall in blood supplies. It was great to have first time donors such as DGN Anton, PP Jan and Rotarian Elize. They were joined by a number of regular donors. We intend making this a regular occasion and hope to be joined by the rest of the club on 12 January 2009 at 17h00 for the next donation. If you attend, you may even be offered a beer

Middelburg Interact Visits Cancer Ward at Unitas Hospital

The Middelburg Interact Club is full of new energy and is continuing to grow. One of the latest projects of the Club has been to undergo training at Unitas Hospital to prepare them for their proposed regular visits to the Childrens Cancer ward at Unitas Hospital. The entire Interact club has undergone the required training and their first visit to the children's cancer ward brought a lot of smiles to the faces of some very sick children. Well done Interact!!!!!!

Bowls day on 25 October for St Josephs Home for the Aged

A beautiful day dawned at the Middelburg Country Club and slowly the Rotarians arrived. Perhaps we should have warned Rotarians against over indulgence the night before such a strenuous project. As usual PP Paul Pavli found a solution to this problem when he found a source of liquid energy at an ealy stage. Club members had great fellowship while they were preparing breakfast for the participants in the Bowls day. I wonder why no one wanted to interfere with Rotarian Charles and his 200 eggs.

This was followed by the bones of friendship which was even more successful than the Breakfast and the bowls. Again it was great to see all the new Rotarians. Those that weren't there missed a wonderful day and an opportunity to meet the Andy's (husbands of the new lady Rotarians), and some of Pres Owen's firewater.

Rotarian Albert thought that an ealy disappearance would save him from the Old Bones. He was wrong as the Old Bone caught up to him at Tuesday's club meeting.

Rotarians Pieter de Wet, Jack Mathibe, Alta Baartmann and Danie Walker were inducted last week. They were introduced by Pres Owen and PE charles respectively.

Blankets to Bankfontein School

Rotarians Charles and Paul went to Bankfontein School to hand out Blankets to children who had been identified prior to the visit. Some recipients were from an area where their shacks had been destroyed, while others were from very poor and unemployed households. The principal, Mr Masemola was quite clear that the blankets were for the identified children. Bullies were not tolerated. The children who received blankets showed their appreciation to Rotary in beautiful song which tugged at the heart strings.

GSE Final Selections took place in Middelburg

The Final selections for the last GSE team to leave the shores of District 9250 took place at the Middelburg Care Village on the weekend of the 18th of October 2009. The weekend was presided over by DGE Anton Meerkotter in his capacity as acting GSE Co-ordinator in his usual dignified and humorous fashion. It was a great weekend which was attended by DG Albie and Elna, PDG Chris and Emlin, PDG Tini and Vida and PDG Doug and Jenny. There were also a number of Rotarians who came from as far as Botswana and Swaziland. It was also a great privilege to have PDG Greg Stathocopolous and Elaine with us. We know that the selection weekend gave them much to take back to District 9300. As always Andre Redman (Honorary Rotarian and Past GSE Member) and Rotarian Chris Botha played a major role in the success of the weekend.

From the initial Approximately 80 applicants that were selected at the clubs and nominated after going through 2nd selection process under the auspices of the AG's 12 excellent candidates arrived at the selection weekend.

On 7 October 2009, we were visited by DG Albie on his rounds around the District. During the club assembly DG Albie thanked the club for its efforts and congratulated the club with the successes of the previous year. He also made special mention of the huge work that AG Gaylene has put in during the course of her term as AG.

During the dinner a new member. Anna Mart Ott, the Chief Executive of the Middelburg Chamber of Commerce was inducted by DG Albie. Welcome to the family!

Paul Harris awards were received by Reuben Webb and Dr Cobus Terblanche for their unselfish and continued assistance to Middelburg Hospice. It is always wonderful to be able to recognise the efforts of people who make a difference in our town.

The Middelburg Rotary Club recognised the woork of a number of learners at the Eastdene Secondary Scool with Certificates of merit. These children in grade 11 and 12 make regular weekly visits to the sick at the Middelburg Provincial Hospital. Their visits are intended, and succeed, in putting a smile on the faces of children and all patients who do not always have someting to smile about.

23rd Rotary Greatest Train Race - 22 August 2009

On 22 August 2009 the 23rd Rotary Greatest Train Race sposored by Anglo Coal, BHP Billiton Energy Coal South Africa and Optimum Coal took place between Witbank/Emelahleni and Middelburg. The race between a train powered by Metrorail and more than 5000 relay teams of runners and walkers lived up to all expectations. With more than 15 000 participants on the road, Rotary's Greatest Train race is now one of the 3 largest Road Running events in South Africa. The race is organised annually by dedicated Rotarians from the Rotary Clubs of Middelburg, Middelburg Cycad and Witbank as a fundraiser for numerous beneficiaries in the Middelburg and Witbank area. The beneficiaries for 2009 include the Middelburg Care Village, numerous institutions for the care of children and the elderly in Middelburg, Hendrina and Witbank, Hospice in Middelburg and Witbank, and the SA Police Reservists in both towns.
Tghis year the organisers received much needed and appreciated assistance from the Rotary Clubs of Letaba, Pretoria West, White River and the Rotoract Club of Pretoria.

When entries closed on 31 July 2009 we had reached 15 000 participants and had to turn away entries for more than a 100 teams.
145 buses were used to transport the athletes to and from their changeovers
1500m of steel barriers were used to control the crowds at the finish and at change-overs
150 000 sachets of water weighing more than 20 ton was used
The train carried 540 disadvantaged elderly and children sponsored by business in the area.
There have been no major incidents or injury reported in the 23 year history of the race.

Dictionaries for Elandslaagte School

On 25 August the Middelburg Rotary Club handed over 200 dictionaries to the headmistress of the very needy primary farm school at Elandslaagte. Mrs Kuhn (the head Mistress) was very greatful, as this donation means that every child in the school would have his/her own dictionary for life. Wow!!! what an evening. The Middelburg Interact Club has had a great year under the firm hand of Rotarian Natacha Du Plessis.
President Pascal Manjerico handed over her chain of office after a succesful year to incoming president Zakkiya Latib on 29 July 2009. It was agreat year for Pascal whose last official function as president was to induct 4 new members into the club. The club now has 10 members and is looking forward to growth and many projects in the new year. The Interact Club will be selling coffee and eats at the 4th Changeover of the Rotary's Greatest Train Race on 22 August. 6 interacters hav already signed up for the RYLA Camp on 27-29 August.
Good luck to President Zakkiya and her team.
It was great to have President Owen of the Middelburg Rotary Club, President Cobus of the Middelburg Rotary Club at the Induction. Fellowship in the Kruger Park

The majority of members of the Middelburg Rotary Club with friends spent a wonderful weekend in the Kruger National Park. The weekend started with a sheep on the spit organised by Rotarian Charles and PP Jan. Friday evening was a great opportunity for fellowship around the spit, and was enjoyed by all.

As happens traditionally, the crowd enjoyed breakfast at Afsaal. some arrived later than others due to leopard and lion sitings.

On Saturday evening President Owen awarded the Rotarasaurus award to Rotarian Charles for his role in the success of the weekend.

A great big Thank You to Rotarian Clifford and his Ann Carol for doing all the hard work and arranging the weekend.

Blankets and Wheelchairs handed out in Mhluzi

The Middelburg Rotary Club handed out blankets and wheelchairs to the needy at the Vukana Themba Project in Mhluzi during the last week. Vukana Themba is a project run by a number of women whose focus is the upliftment of the very needy children and elderly in Mhluzi. They do home based care for these people and also run a feeding scheme. President Owen has indicated that he wants to make Vukana Themba one of the beneficiaries in his year as President. We are off to a great start

On 20 June 2009, Owen Maroleni was inducted as President of the Middelburg Rotary Club for 2009/2010. He implored the Club to continue the good work which the club has done under President Jan, and be the example that the community of Middelburg must look up to.

The Club celebrated a great year under President Jan Botha and an involvement in numerous projects.

During the evening the Club recognised a number of Paul Harris Fellows for their contribution to the the Club and Community.

Howdee to all

After a challenging and fruitful year as President of the most vibrant Rotary Club, only words of thanks are applicable.
I would like to thank the members of the Board for the time spent to ensure that we made this year a success.
Our final Board meeting, also the longest, was definitely the most fruitful. I was told afterwards that it was a very constructive meeting.
We resolved a lot of issues and the future [planning was brainstormed from all directions.
The main principle is that club members must support each other. Project Champions will from time to time be speakers at the club to update the club on their projects.
The future of our club can be described as "the sky is the limit"
Thank you and may the next year be as rewarding as 2008/9

Water and Blankets for Elandslaagte School!!

On the 3rd of June The Middelburg Rotary Club officially handed over a new borehole and watertanks to the Elandslaagte School. Elandslaagte is a rural school which was built for about 100 children. It currently has 297 learners in the primary school phase. There wasn't enough water for drinking or ablutions and as such the toilets couldn't be flushed. Under the watchful eye of Rotarian Charles Deiner a borehole was sunk, and 2 new watertanks erected. Now there is more than enough water for all the learners.

At the same time, AG Gaylene Deiner, PP Andre Brandmuller, Rotarians Charles Deiner and Albert Myburgh handed over a blanket to every child in the school. These blankets were received gratefully by children ranging in age from 6 to 14 years. The blankets could not have been given to them at a better time.

A great thank you to Rotary Foundation for the matching grant programme which enables us to warm the children in rural communities who really need it

District Conference 2009

8 Rotarians from the Middelburg Club and 7 Rotaractor attended the 2009 Rotary District conference at the Ranch Hotel in Polokwane. Although it appeared that fewer Rotarians attended the conference than before, it was one of the best ever.
The tone was set by the speeches of the RI Vice President Dr Monty Audenard. A dentist by profession, a Rotarian at heart. His vivid descriptions of his experiences as a Rotarian made many of the delegates proud to be a member of the Rotary Family.
We shared with many Rotary clubs the successes in a large variety of large and small projects.
PP Andre Brandmuller did a presentation on the co-operation between the Rotary Clubs of Middelburg and Witbank on the Greatest Train Race. In the spirit of the conference, we were approached by a number of Rotary Clubs to come and assist with manpower on the day.
A great conference was followed by a great party..... Perhaps the photo's will follow!

More wheelchairs handed out!

The Middelburg Rotary Club visited the community in Nasaret, where they handed out a number of wheelchairs to some of the most needy. The pictures show the thankful recipients with President Jan, Ann President Ronel and some of the team. In addition the Anns also handed some uniforms and stocks to Emily and her team of care-givers at the Rosebud centre in Nasaret to assist them with their work of caring for elderly and other people in Nasaret who cannot look after themselves.

4 Way Test Award - Eastdene Combined School

The Eastdene Combined School recently awarded the coveted 4 Way Test award in the school to Given Ngwatle. This award is made annually in a number of schools in Middelburg under the auspices of the Middelburg Rotary Club to the Grade 11 (High Schools) and Grade 6 (Primary Schools) learner who comes closest to achieving the goals set by the 4 Way test of Rotary in their school:

GSE Team Does Presentation to Clubs of Middelburg and Witbank

Shortly more than 24 hours after having arrived in SA and district 9250, Team Leader Bill and his team were making their first presentation to a joint meeting of the Rotary Clubs of Middelburg, Middelburg Cycad and Witbank. This was after a full day of vocational visits for all the team members.

Bill and Jim spent the entire day with the SA Police Service, and then Jim also got to see the public library. Mark spent most of his day experiencing the dayly workings of a family owned motor dealership. Jeanne and Michele were out with the paramedics of the Midmed Hospital for the day. We are sure that those experiences will be shared with us on their blog which link will be attached to this one as from today to follow their progress.

The presentation was wonderful and the 60 people present thoroughly enjoyed it. It was wonderful to have representation from all 3 clubs and the Middelburg Rotaract Club.

Rotarian Natacha seemed very quiet at this meeting. Is there any reason why? Perhaps the picture tells the story!!!

GSE Team from Kansas Missouri has arrived!

The GSE team from District 6040, Kansas Missouri has arrived. Team leader Bill Cosgrove ( a retired Policeman) with Michele Stuart, Jeanne Schmick (both paramedics), Jim Staley (a public administrator) and Mark Guy (an auto tradesman) arrived in South Africa on 27 April 2009 after a long and exhausting trip.

They were welcomed by DG Ian McGlashan and DG Ann Blondie as well as PP Anton Meerkotter and PP Andre Brandmuller at the airport. Their African experience starts in Middelburg, and will finish at the conference in Polokwane.

2009 Chariot Race

The Middelburg Rotary presented the 2009 Chariot Race on 25 April. The purpose of the race is to show our communities that physically challenged persons also enjoy a day of fun, laughter and endurance racing.

The day was a great success, made even more so by the presence of the Warriors Rotaract Club from Tzaneen. The Warriors Rotaractors together with the Midack athletics club jointly won the trophy which was awarded to the teams with the best spirit, and who contributed to the success of the race.

We look forward to seeing all of them again in 2010.

The Middelburg Rotary Club had another funfilled meeting on Tuesday. As always Rotarian Natacha confirmed her status as the holder of the stirrers spoon. the fact that she can still blush is a good sign.

The meeting discussed the various projects of the club. It was agreed that the proposed amendments to the Club Bylaws be discussed as a matter of urgency.

Middelburg Rotary Club to help Elandslaagte School

At one of the recent meetings of the Middelburg club, rotarian Charles Deiner reported on a visit to the Elandslaagte School. The picture he painted of a school with a lack of toilets and water for its 200 pupils was a sad one indeed. the Club agreed to assist the school with a project to provide water by a borehole, and some water tanks to ensure that there is sufficient water for drinking and ablutions. This would typically have been a project within the matching grant programme of RI, but unfortunately, the Foundation has already spent all its available funding for matching grants for this cycle.

Anton to be District Governor in 2011/12

Anton Meerkotter, a past president and active member of the Middelburg Rotary Club has been nominated to be the 2nd District Governor of the new District 9400 in 2011/2012. His best known characteristic is his sense of humour and his ablity to find something funny in every situation.

Anton has been involved in district committees over the past number of years, and has been a team leader of a Goup Study Exchange team to Florida.

He is currently involved as the team leader of the finance team responsible for the merger between District 9250 and 9300.

We are proud of you Anton, and we wish you well in this great endeavour.

Middelburg Rotary Club to assist with Loskop Fun Run

At its meeting on 17 February, the Middelburg Rotary club confirmed its committment to assisting the marathon club with the Fun Run which takes place on the evening before the annual Loskop marathon. This race was previously organised by the Lions Club of Middelburg. The club will be working with Greame Strangelman of Midack Athletics club who has already done all the work. We will have to supply 15 marshalls, a vehicle for the transport of some tables, a generator and lights. The Club intend including the Rotoract and Interact clubs for this project.

Canadian donation to Middelburg Care Village

It was reported in one of the earlier posts that Rotarian Chris Das of the Strathroy Rotary Club handed over a cheque to Colin Hasses, a Rotarian of the Middelburg Cycad Rotary Club who is also the manager of the Middelburg Care Village. The purpose of the donation was to pay for training of caregivers at the Middelburg Care Village. The training was successfully completed in December. Thank you again to Chris and all the Rotarians in Canada who contributed.

Middelburg Rotary Club Supports Foundation New Vision

The Middelburg Rotary Club at its club meeting on 27 January 2008 discussed the implications of the New Vision for the Rotary Foundation, and whether it should support the district in applying to be one of the pilot districts proposed for the new vision plan. It was explained to the club that two thirds of the district would have to support this proposal before the District could make application to The Foundation to be a pilot district. It was also discussed that District 9250 and District 9300 would jointly have to apply to be a pilot district, and that that would only be done in the event of the clubs in both districts agreeing thereto with the required majority. There was a lively debate on the pro's and cons of the plan after the broad guidelines had been explained to the Club by PP Andre Brandmuller.
After debate, the Club unanimously agreed to support the district in an application to become one of the Pilot Districts of the New Vision of the Rotary Foundation.

Middelburg Rotary Club Takes Down Christmas Lights

Christmas is over …. And the Christmas lights put up by the Middelburg Rotary Club have been taken down and packed away for another year. On Saturday the Club assisted by cherrypickers from the municipality and a team from Wolma spent the morning closing out the project. A great big thank you to Rotarian Albert and his team of trusty helpers who did the job. A special thank you also to Rotarian Elize and her team of ladies who sat patiently at the Care Village waiting to manage each delivery of lights.

How is the economic crisis affecting the Rotary Foundation?

The current investment climate continues to present challenges to our organization. Since 30 September, Rotary International’s General Fund declined 16.1 percent, resulting in a fiscal year-to-date unrealized investment loss of 24 percent, or US$22 million. The Rotary Foundation’s investments (except for the PolioPlus Fund) also have experienced declines in line with the markets, resulting in unrealized losses of $165 million from July through November.
As we previously reported, nearly all losses to date are unrealized (i.e., due to declines in the
market prices of the securities held and would be realized only if the securities are sold). Because Rotarians have continued to pay their dues on time and make generous contributions to the Foundation, we have not had to sell any of our investment securities to meet operating expenses. You have likely read about the securities fraud committed by Bernard Madoff. Through one of its hedge fund managers, the Foundation had minor exposure (less than
0.1 percent of the Foundation’s total investments) to one of Madoff’s investment vehicles. We are working with our independent investment consultants to minimize this loss and reduce Rotary’s risk in this area. Investment earnings, and if necessary, operating reserves, are used to fund a portion of RI’s operating expenses, and all of the Foundation’s operating expenses. While RI’s reserves remain above the Board’s targeted level, the Foundation’s reserves have declined significantly below the level required by the Trustees.

"Therefore, we (your Board of Directors and the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation, and your Secretariat staff) have been reducing spending and are taking the following actions:
* Deferring all nonessential activities, including committee meetings
* Canceling all nonessential discretionary spending, including staff and volunteer travel, overtime expenses, temporary help, consultants, and staff development
* Reducing staff and volunteer costs while traveling on Rotary International and Foundation business
* Preparing contingency plans and austerity budgets for 2009-10

As noted in my previous communications, Rotary’s senior leaders, the Financial Services staff, Rotary’s investment consultants, and I continue to closely monitor the financial markets. We are taking all possible steps to ensure that Rotary remains financially strong in this difficult economic environment."

Joint Anns Evening with Middelburg Cycad

On the 8th of December the Rotary Clubs of Middelburg and Middelburg Cycad had a joint meeting which was adressed by Ambassadorial scholar Lynsee Melchi from Illinois. Lynsee was most entertaining and all present enjoyed her talk.

In addition we had a surprise guest in Rotarian Chris Das from the Strathroy Rotary Club in Canada. He handed over a bank draft in the amount of $2500,00 towards the training of the caregivers at the Middelburg Care Village to Rotarian Colin Hasses, who is also the manager of the Village. This again proves the value of established relationships between Rotary clubs all over the world. THANK YOU to Chris and all the Rotarians in Strathroy for your wonderful support.

It was also great to have the entire Rotoract Club of Middelburg at the Meeting. They are a wonderful vibrant group and are already seeing the success of their efforts in the "light up the life of a child" Project. You can see them all in the picture below with Lynsee.

Christmas Lights are up!!!

PP Paul Pavli and his team spent an entire weekend erecting the Christmas lights for 2008. The positive comments are already pouring in. The lights are looking great... especially the new 3D ones. A great big thank you to the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality and all the sponsors for making this project a reality this year. The entire town looks all the better for it.

Donation To Hendrina Old Age Home

On 11 November 2008 the Middelburg Rotary Club donated crockery (60 x cups, saucers, plates and side plates), linen (50 x fitted sheets, flat sheets and bath towels) and a 40 lt microwave oven to the Old Age Home in Hendrina. This donation was accepted with great appreciation by the representatives of the Old Age Home when it was handed over by Pres Jan Botha (arm in sling) and PP Stinus Breedt. A big thank you also to PP Ashrif Latib who negotiated the prices.

It was great to have visitors of the Cycad Rotary Club with us at the meeting when the hand over took place. The smiles on the faces of Pres Giovanni Lamprecht, PP Andreas Mastoroudis, PE Wesseie van der Westhuizen, and PP John Brislin seem to indicate that they also enjoyed the meeting

The Middelburg Rotary Club and Middelburg Cycad club annually take responsibility for a week long trip to the Rotary resort at Badplaas by approximately 40 senior citizens. This is a wonderful opportunity for those senior citizens who would normally not be able to afford a holiday. At a cost of R1000,00 per person for a week which includes the food, entertainment and all the facilities of a resort and the transport to get there and back, it is a bargain. Rotarians from the Middelburg club under the watchful eye of AG Gaylene Deiner were there to see the excited holiday makers off.

St Josephs Bowls Day

On Sunday 24 October 2008 Rotarians from the Middelburg and Cycad Clubs arrived at the Middelburg Country Club prepared with Braai's tongs and aprons to prepare breakfast for the participants in the bowls day which is organised annually in aid of the St Josephs Home for the aged.

Everybody enjoyed a wonderful breakfast after which a day of fun on the bowling greens followed. All the players are already looking forward to next years bowls day ...... and off course the breakfast!

Loskop weekend

The Middelburg Rotary Club in conjunction with Forever Resorts hosted a number of underprivileged children at Loskop dam for a weekend in October. The children were spoilt by the Rotarians and Forever Resorts with food, games and fun. There was great appreciation from these children for the opportunity given to them to spend time in a resort which they would otherwise not have had. A good time was had by all including the Rotarians who enjoyed wonderful fellowship.

GSE Final Selections

The annual selections for the Group Study exchange team to travel to Kansas Missouri in District 6040 took place over the weekend of 24 October 2008. Although the economic crunch in the world clearly had an effect on the number of candidates, there is no doubt that we are once again sending a quality team to represent our District.

PP John Brislin from the Middelburg Cycad Club was selected as Team Leader. The team includes Candice Maroos (Middelburg), Euridice Vicente (Maputo), Yssel van der Goot (Louis Trichardt) and Anelize Usher (Pretoria East).

It was a wonderful weekend during which the candidates got to know themselves and each other a lot better.

A great big thank you to all the Rotarians who gave of their time to spend the weekend with us.

TRAIN RACE APPRECIATION

On 2 October a function was held at which the Train Race organising committee expressed their thanks and appreciation to sponsors and donors of the 2008 Greatest train Race. it was a wonderful evening at which Mr Furges Maropen, the newly appointed Vice President for Human Resources at BHP Billiton Energy Coal South africa re-affirmed their commitment to the Train Race.

Mr John Brislin, the convenor of the Train Race also handed out a number of cheques to the 3 Rotary Clubs for the projects that were the beneficiaries of the 2008 race.

Witbank, Middelburg and Middelburg Cycad Rotary Clubs each received R90 000,00 for the projects they propsed as beneficiaries to the Race. The Middelburg Care Village received R140 000,00.

A further R70 000, 00 has been put towards skills development in the schools in the area by the use of amongst others the high technology whiteboards that enable schools to share resources through the internet.

More than R6000, 00 was also raised for the Bible Society by athletes contributions.

An additional R200 000,00 was kept in an Emergency Fund for use in the event of disaster or major emergency need in the area.

DG Ian McGlashan visits Middelburg Rotary Club

DG Ian and his spouse Blondie visited the Middelburg Rotary club on their annual visit on 26 August 2008. it was a very busy day for them as they were shown a number of projects by President Jan and DG Gaylene. In addition DG Ian put President Jan and his board of Directors on the spot with his comments durin the Club Assembly. It does appear though, that DG Ian is fairly satisfied with the work the club is doing. He was immensely impressed with the size of the Greatest Train Race, but sounded certain warning bells for the organising committee which must not go unheeded.

After assembly the Rotarians and Anns enjoyed lovely fellowship at which they were joined by the Rotoract Club Of Middelburg. DG Ian expressed his thanks for their presence, an told them that he was immensely impressed by their behaviour at the Pub at the Train Race which was manned by them.

During the meeting Albert Myburgh was inducted as a Rotarian.

President Jan also received a handmade glass statuette from DG Ian depicting the Rotary theme for 2008 - "Make Dreams Real".

We hope and believe that Ian and Blondie enjoyed their stay with us.

The Rotary Greatest Train Race is over - Long Live the Train Race

On 23 August 2008 the Rotary clubs of Middelburg, Middelburg Cycad and Witbank hosted the 22nd annual Greatest Train Race which was sponsored by BHP Billiton Energy Coal South Africa.

This race which started from small beginnings as a fundraising roed relay event in 1987, has grown into the largest community event in Mpumalanga, and one of the largest in the country. With 12 800 participants it also now has established itself as on of the 3 largest event in the road running calender in the entire South Africa.

The success and continued growth of the event can be ascribed to the involvement of the corporate sector who continue to use it as an opportunity for teambuilding whilst they are supporting the needy in the community.

The beneficiaries of the 2009 Race include the Middelburg Care Village, Enthembeni Street Children's Project, Highveld House, a skills development programme for 15-18 year olds, Middelburg Hospice, Bambanani centre for Children in Mhluzi and other listed on the website www.gtr.co.za .

The hard work of the organising committee under the leadership of PP John Brislin of Miidelburg Cycad has made this year another resounding success, although the 50% growth in participants from 2007 has provided some challenges.

The Middelburg Chariot Race

On 24 May 2008, the Middelburg Rotary Club ran the 2nd annual Chariot Race through the streets of the town. As always, the Race succeeded in making the community aware of the ability of mentally and physically challenged persons to enjoy life. Unfortunately only 3 cars participated, but everybody there had fun.

It was wonderful to have a team from the Letaba Club in Tzaneen. Their youthful spirit led them to be the winners of the day. We believe that this is a race that will continue to grow and create awareness for the plight of disabled persons.

We also look forward to working with Letaba toward re-establising their Chariot Race.

16 June 2008 - BLANKET DRIVE

On 16 June 2008, Rotarians from the Middelburg Rotary Club, their Anns, partners, and children, set off to Mhluzi together with members of the South African Police Service in a joint project, set off to one of the poorest areas in the township of Mhluzi at Middelburg in order to hand out some off the blankets which had been received in terms of a matching grant with District 7010. In addition to the blankets jerseys were also handed out to provide much needed warmth for the winter.
It was a chaotic but most rewarding morning for all involved, even though, sadly, all the needy could not be helped. The blankets and jerseys that were handed out will make a difference to those who did receive them. The pictures tell the story.

Induction Of President Jan Botha

On the 7th of June the Middelburg Rotary Club inducted Jan Botha as its President for the 2008/9 year.

What an evening! It felt like the old days of school prize givings with all the awards that were going around.

The Middelburg Rotary Club was announced to be the Club of the year in District 9250 for the 2007/8 year and was also the club in the district who had made the largest contribution to the Rotary foundation per capita in this year. WELL DONE!!!

In addition, AG Gaylene Deiner was recognised by the DG as the best assistant governor in the past year.

The Club recognised the contributions of rotarian Chris Botha at the Middelburg Care Village, and Collisens Electrical at the Train Race and everywhere else by merit certificates.

The following members were awarded Paul Harris Fellowships by the Club for their different contributions:

PP Anya Chrissopoulos - Involvement in the youth programmes of the club, establishment of Rotoract, and Group Study Exchange;

Ann President Ronel Vismer - Work in the administration of the Club and particularly her involvement in the project of the aged to Badplaas

PP Paul Pavli (Saphire award)- His efforts on the Christmas lights project and his commitment to the club

PP Andre Brandmuller (Saphire award) - His work on the Train Race, and the Middelburg Care Village

Generally it was a wonderful evening, and the club wishes Pres Jan well for his year

Rotary/Rotoract AIDS Hike 2007

The Rotary Clubs of Middelburg, Middelburg Cycad, and Witbank were privileged to host the Hikers on the Rotary Rotoract AIDS hike from District 9300 on 2 and 3 December 2007. They were accommodated at the Middelburg Care Village, and a joint Meeting of the 3 clubs was held there on the evening of 3 December with the Hikers.

Desiree, Bongane, Bongani, Ernest, Brighton and Tsholofelo are hiking from Johannesburg to Durban in order to raise awareness about AIDS and also raise funds.

Middelburg Cycad Greek Evening

The Middelburg Rotary Club was ably represented at the Greek and Portuguese evening arranged by the Middelburg Cycad Rotary Club on 30 November 2007.

A wonderful evening of music dancing and general partying was enjoyed by all. 1200 plates were broken in the spirit of the evening.Our own Zorba (PP Paul Pavli) showed everyone how to do a proper greek dance.

SARPS MIDDELBURG (MP) TRAINING CAMP 2007: THANK YOU

The SARPS of Middelburg (MP) would herewith like to extend our most heartfelt gratitude for donations and support for the SARPS training camp held at the Marsonita SARPS Training Facility over the weekend 16 to 18 November 2007.

The members received firearm training (night shoot, evaluation tables, Israeli House practical shooting exercise, paintball tactical manoeuvres etc), tactical approach manoeuvres, practical observation skills etc.

We were visited by our Provincial Head - Reservists, Snr/Supt Hennie Kleynhans and the Head Reservist - Witbank, Capt Johan Mayer. Their comments on the camp’s organisation and camp as a whole ranged from “unbelievable, I have never seen anything like this to my mouth is hanging open”.

The following members won the floating trophies: Insp Ernest Bean (Espirit de Corps), Sgt Chris Gatzonis (Shooting) and Std/Cst Geoff Sill (Best Student).

This camps total success would not have been achieved had it not been for the support from the community and organisations such as Rotary. Please see attached photographs of the camp.

We are hereby extending an invitation to you and your members to become honorary members of Club 4/59’er the official club of the SARPS, Middelburg (MP).

The Middelburg Rotary Club lit up the nightlights of Middelburg last night when the lights at the Christmas Tree at Kentucky Fried Chicken were switched on. It looks stunning!!

Gaylene presented the financials. It was agreed that those beneficiaries who have been allocated money must apply with a written proposal.

The club agreed that an article must be written on a regular basis in the Middelburg Observer about the Club. Andre will approach the editor.

Paul reported on the Christmas lights project and asked that the Club commits itself to selling globes.

Globes will be sold at Spar on Saturday. Next Saturday globes will be sold at Pick and Pay.

No club meetings will be held on 18 December and on 25 December 2007.

PP Rob confirmed that the assistance to Mhluzi primary is being investigated and will be completed in early 2008

On 3 December at 18h00 we will have a joint Anns meeting with Cycad and Witbank to welcome the Rotoract Aids Hikers from Johannesburg. food will be supplied, but please bring your own drinks.

PP Andre reported on the extention to Hendrina. The first meeting will be held in January 2008.

The club had a busy meeting and received some important reportback. The Christmas lights were erected over the past weekend thanks to the hard work of PP Paul Pavli and his team. All 114 lights were sold.
Paul proposed that we consider enlarging the marketing area for the advertisers next year in order for the project to continue growing. This idea met with support from the club.

PP Andre advised that the children of the Middelburg Care Village had agreed to do a Christmas Carole singing at the houses which have been decorated for Christmas. The dates will be given to the club.

Rotarian Clifford confirmed that the fellowship weekend would take place at Dikhoklolo on the weekend of 25 to 27 July 2008. PLEASE CONFIRM YOUR ATTENDANCE.

The guest speaker was Mr Noah Hlengetwa, the Principal of Mhluzi Primary School. He shared a number of the challenges faced by the school including the problems of crime and security as well as a lack of IT Resources. It was great to hear that this school and its learners are rising up above these challenges and are attempting new projects in the field of the environment, vegetable gardening and drama. We asked Mr Hlengetwa to submit a needs list to the board for consideration.

The Middelburg Care Village was the host to the 2007 Final GSE selections for district 9250. The weekend started on friday night a meet and greet and som entertainment from the kids from the Care Village.

On Saturday the candidates ( team leader and members) were put through their paces by the interview panel under the able chairmanship of OB Macwele and assisted by Anton Meerkotter, and an activity panel chaired by Honorary Rotarian Andre Redman.

A wonderful weekend was enjoyed by all present.

We would like to thank the Care Village for its hospitality.

All our good wishes accompany AG Cheryl Jute and her team, John Phiri, Tobias Fourie, Michele Lerm and David Letsoalo, who were selected from an exceptional group of candidates.

Christmas Lights Again!!!!!

The work parties of 2007 can really be seen as spiritful and hands-on. Everybody involved worked hard to achieve the goal to put up the lights by 3 November 2007. On Saturday 20 October all lights were completed and sorted. The Rotatact club also did their share during this brief, but fruitful few weeks of sleeping, dreaming and repairing lights. We would like to thank all Rotarians, Rotaracts and Volunteers for their time and effort. We are now awaiting Saturday 3 November to get Middelburg into the Christmas spirit. Uncle Jack as always didn't miss a work party. Showing us youngsters what can be done if a team works together. Our President also participated during numerous occasions when help was really needed. Thank you Paul for all your effort in this project. He made sure that tools, lights etc. were readily available to speed up the repair process.

Matching grant for the Middelburg Care Village

The Middelburg Rotary Club and the Strathroy Rotary club in Canada initiated a process for a matching grant in aid of the Middelburg Care Village through the Rotary Foundation during December 2007 after a meeting between Rotarian Chris Das (from Strathroy) and PP Andre Brandmuller(from Middelburg).

As a result of the incredible efforts of Dianne Twynstra and Chris Das in Canada the grant grew to include contributions from Middelburg, Strathroy, and the clubs of Forest and Grand Bend in Canada.

The amount of R211 000,00 was paid into the project account in the beginning of October 2007 as a result of the approval of the grant.

The Middelburg Care Village will benefit with workshop tools, playground equipment, furnishings, Linen, curtains, duvets, crockery and cutlery, beds and mattresses. In addition the boreholes on the property will be redrilled and assist in the supply of fresh water for, amongst others, the new vegetable and fruit garden.

The Rotary Foundation and its matching grant programme has again assisted in the needs of an organisation which is trying to assist those who need it most.

Loskop Weekend for underpriviliged children

Over the past weekend the Middelburg Rotary Club hosted the annual breakaway of 48 underpriviliged kids to the Forever Resorts Loskopdam resort.
The children who were identified in a number of schools from the Middelburg area were treated to a wonderful weekend of play, swimming, boat trips (game viewing), watermelon fights, a dance and even a show by the South African Police Service dog unit.

The kids had a wonderful time and were exhausted, but happy when they returned to Middelburg on Sunday afternoon.

The chief organiser, Rotarian Elize Botha did a great job to ensure that everything went smoothly. She was assisted by her team of Rotarians and Anns who included President Justin and Natalie, President elect Jan Botha, AG Gaylene and Ronel, Paul Pavli, Johan van Rensburg, Anya Chrissopoulos, Rob Sole, and Anton Meerkotter.
The newly formed Middelburg Rotoract club and the Interacters from the Middelburg Hoerskool also made a wonderful contribution to the success of the weekend.

Jan Gildenhuys thanked everybody for their support during last 2 weeks. The Rotary club donated R2000 to Hospice in memory of Charne in stead of flowers..

The Club received a request from SAPS reservists for training. The club agreed to pay for 10 members at R550 each

The Club decided that the 4 Way Test award programme be extended to Hendrina Combined School

Elize and Anton will investigate the possibility of project with kids at the Kibbutz around Middelburg. Club will contribute R1000 towards tinfoods for the Kibbutz.

Ashrif confirmed that there is still a need to get new members. We must be focused on obtaining quality members for the club.

Finance: There is R 345 000 in the project account. The majority has already been allocated to SWEMBE, the Middelburg Care Village, Hospice and the Old Age Homes in Middelburg and Hendrina. There is R 24000 in the club account, and 15% of the project funds will be transferred to club funds. That has made it possible to reduce the subs to R600 per year.

There are a couple of beds vacant for Seniors to Badplaas.

Elize again asked all Rotarians for support during the coming weekend at Loskop.

The Christmas lights are going up on 3 November. The Municipality is giving 2 cherrypickers. There are 30 more lights to be sold. PLEASE HELP!!!!.

A Note from Gaylene!

Dear Rotarians

Please note that there will be a work party on Saturday 6 October commencing at 9h00 at the Care Village. The Rotaractors will be there to assist but we will appreciate as many Rotarians and their families as possible to be there. Our time is very limited to complete the maintenance and a concerted effort by members will take the pressure off the committee. If you can only be there for part of the day that is also fine.

Food will be provided – just bring your own refreshments. Please advise numbers in order to assist the catering.

Should you know of prospective GSE candidates please pass their details on to Anya. The selections will be on Tuesday 9 October at the Care Village. The persons must be between the ages of 18 and 40 and have been active in their profession for a minimum of 2 years. The exchange will be around May 2008 to Canada for 6 weeks and all expenses relating to travel and accommodation will be covered.

Please advise Elize if you will be assisting on the weekend of 12 October with the children to Loskop . If you will be staying over it is imperative that you urgently advise her as we need to confirm the accommodation. All Rotarians and their families are invited to join us for lunch on Sunday – please advise to facilitate catering.

Sergeant Jan Botha did a great job collecting the fines from those present.

He wished Owen Maruleni well with his new job at Corrothem Special Metals.

Johan Stronkhorst, the headmaster of Middelburg Hoerskool, and a past GSE Team member attended the meeting as a guest of Jan Steenkamp.

The Club had a minute silence as a token of respect for the passing away of Jan Geldenhuys's daughter during the past week. Our deepest condolences go to Jan and his family.

Elize Botha invited all Rotarians to join the team at Loskop for lunch on Sunday 14 October. Please contact her with numbers if any Rotarian and his family intends being there.

Clifford confirmed that Dikhololo has been provisionally booked for the weekend of 14 to 16 June 2008 for the club fellowship.

Gaylene asked for some assistance from club members with respect to the follow-up of advertisers on the Christmas lights.
